If you make a mistake installing this software, it is possible to permanently disable your router, effectively turning it into a brightly colored brick. If after 20 minutes 192.168.1.1 is unresponsive you may reboot both PC and router.
If after 5 minutes 192.168.1.1 is unresponsive first reboot your PC and try again. Wait about 5 minutes then you should be able to connect to 192.168.1.1
If you get the error message “please choose a file to upgrade”, then rename the firmware file to something shorter (i.e. Gargoyle images are available for many routers. Check the exact version of your router hardware carefully before selecting the download. The recommended way to install Gargoyle is to Download the correct Gargoyle factory.bin image to your PC and then install the image onto your router using the original manufacturers GUI.
